The importance of typography can not afford to be overlooked when it comes to graphic design. Creative typography contributes to brand recognition and helps you to deliver your message quickly and easily. For appealing, creative typography in graphic design, you require a good understanding of the basic principles of typography. At first, this may seem like a daunting task, but with practice, you will soon develop an eye for what works. Resulting in you creating better strategic design choices.
Typeface & Font
Typeface and font are often used interchangeably, with most people assuming they mean the same thing. You might be surprised to learn that they are in fact two completely different elements of typography. A ‘typeface’ refers to a family of fonts, such as Arial or Calibri. Whereas ‘font’ refers to the weight of the typeface, such as regular, bold or italic. When learning about typography for your business it is important to understand the difference between the pair when designing branding.
Pairing Fonts
Pairing two typefaces is an art form in itself when it comes to creative typography. If you manage to master the art of font selection and pairing, you will add value to your creative graphic design and your work will reach a new level of standard visually.
When pairing two typefaces, there are two ways to go about it. The first is to pair two fonts within the same typeface. For example, using a regular font for the body of the copy and then using a bold font in the same typeface for the header. This is generally considered the easier option and is usually what people will tend to lean towards when they are not experienced in creative typography.
The second option is to choose two completely different typefaces, the general rule is to avoid pairing two typefaces which are very similar in style as there needs to be a visual contrast between the pair. One way of doing this is by using a serif font for the copy and a sans serif font for headings.
Deliver a Message
The purpose of graphic design is to deliver visual communication. When a design is primarily image-based the typography needs to be strong to set itself apart from the image. Whereas in a post that is primarily heavy-text, you should use typography to differentiate any sections that are different and call attention to important text by changing the font. Either way, there must remain a balance between the competing elements in order to get the message across quickly.
